Black Rock Photos #4

"Home Sweet Home"

There are plenty of remains of dwellings in the desert. Some are left from mining company towns. Others were built by desperate people who subsisted by mining small claims and raising vegetables during the depression. Some are now inhabited by cows.

I love finding old buildings like these out in the "middle of nowhere." I always wonder who built them, and when, and what happened that now they're abandoned. Sometimes I like to make up stories in my head about the people who might have lived there once upon a time. Although it does make me feel a bit sad, too.

Me, too. The Depression-era stories in these houses are sort of inherently sad. Serious desperation there. But the Rabbit Hole house, the one with the skull and all, seems more like the home of an eccentric child or a loopy desert saint. Thanks for looking!
