To paraphrase Rat from The Wind in the Willows, summer is supposed to be about messing about in boats. In my world, the boat part needs to require absolutely no skill on my part. One of my best summers ever was spent almost entirely in a raft floating around the pool reading. I have been sailing with people who know about halyards and bollards and masts and it was interesting, but not precisely relaxing. On the Truckee River, lack of skill might get you stuck in a bush for a while, or slightly wetter than you might prefer, but it’s not going to be dangerous.
I intend to laugh, to get damp, and to enjoy the sun with my kid. And I’ll bring back a photo to prove it.
