Like crackers. I’ve been eating crackers the last few days. I always put the salty side against my tongue because that’s what I like about the crackers. I like that they are rigid and flaky at the same time.
They are, truthfully, pretty boring as foods go. Right now this is a virtue. I know what I’m dealing with when it’s about crackers. And the worst things that can happen with crackers, in terms of reverse peristalsis, are not that bad.
I ate crackers a lot more when I was a kid. Probably because I ate more canned soup. So the crackers also have a bit of an aura around them. They’re like having my mom smooth my sheets, like having the drapes closed in the daytime. Proust has his fancy cookies; me, I get saltines.
