And I also want long braids...

One of my persistent fantasies is that I will somehow live a self-sufficient life. I’ll be able to grow my own food, make my own clothes, and generally exist in a modern version of Little House on the Prairie. Although I no longer covet a sunbonnet, having realized that they’re actually really ugly.

Problem: I am not skilled. Watching me fail would make an entertaining reality show if I were more attractive. In this episode, Janet takes on snails then drinks the beer intended to kill them in a peaceful organic kind of way…

Skills can be acquired, however. Having just completed the most complicated sewing project of my life, I feel like I’m getting closer to competent in that department, but I still need to learn about things like zippers, fabric with nap, and matching patterns. In the garden, I can grow tomatoes (“Any idiot can grow tomatoes,” my ex-father-in-law used to say. That was the year my tomatoes died, making me not just any idiot.). But now that it is fall, I need to figure out what to do with my beds to make them happy for the winter and/or productive.

So the syllabus for the current semester is something like Homemaking 1A. It should be interesting, in a train-wreck sort of way.
