Don't forget to melt butter in the pan before you start

Today I get to work on my math homework. (See the positive thinking imbedded right there in the sentence? Get to? Homework, as if it were a school thing, like I’m good at?) I volunteered to do it.

I recently joined the board of a nonprofit. My prize is four years of back tax returns that need to be filed. I’ve done 990 forms before, so I know I can do it. I just don’t like the process. Some of the years are going to be messy; at least 2006, the year I’m working on today, doesn’t have any glaring weirdnesses.

This seems to be the latest in my string of projects that require patience and care, small steps that will, God willing, add up to something good at the end. I hate that stuff.

Me for instant gratification, please! Hand over the marshmallow and no one gets hurt. Not really. I can wait for my two marshmallows. What’s hard is that it looks like I need to wait a week instead of twenty minutes and I’ll get a whole bag of marshmallows, which is more marshmallows than I’ll know what to do with. Maybe I’ll negotiate for some Rice Krispies.
