Frosty in hell?

When I was little, I took piano lessons (because Girls Take Piano and Boys Play Little League were simply known to be true). I took them for a long time. I liked the idea of piano lessons. I liked imagining myself in a gorgeous gown under a spotlight at a grand piano with silver candelabra playing for audiences who would weep at the beauty of it all. Practicing? Um, well…

I have a piano. I have piano music. I don’t have oceans of time, but I can find a few minutes here and there. So yesterday I set the timer and practiced for half an hour. In a few more days, I should play the easy version of “Frosty the Snowman” in a non-embarrassing fashion.

I like the same things about piano that I like about ballet. It takes a whole different kind of attention than my usual. I remember things with my body as well as my head. And I cannot think of anything else while I do it. It beats the heck out of meditation.

Plus, you know, if I keep at it, I can force my family into singing around the piano at Christmas time. Maybe I should look for matching Christmas sweaters…
