Today was all about books. Except for the part where Syd was attacked by a drinking fountain. This is a reenactment put on to humor me, but the real event was much funnier, involving a spray of water to the face:

Yes, I am exceptionally childish. I would have felt bad for laughing if Syd had got hurt, which seems to be at least a little progress toward maturity.

We returned to the Public Library of New South Wales. If there is such a thing as a book church, I think this is it. It has statues of its saints, stained glass windows, and inspiring architecture. The Sacred Order of Librarians watches over the books, tending to their holy needs. I like it there.

Syd liked Antarctica. I wandered around again struggling with illicit desires to turn the pages of the books in the cases to see even more of the botanical drawings, the imaginative monsters, and the careful and elaborate maps. I hope that one of the perks of having a kid who wants to be a librarian is a chance to touch the cool stuff someday.

Then we went to the bookstore for some non-rare books. T. ran out again. I am hoping that the four or five more we bought today are enough to get him home, as the bulk of our purchases begins to reach alarming proportions. It is a good problem to have, that he reads so much. Also that we can buy books, even if we have to develop heretofore unknown muscles to lug them around.

The rest of the day was spent in peaceful reading and general relaxation.

As always, I'm enjoying reading your travelogue!

I can relate to the good problem of having a kid who reads so much--even on a trip of much less scope than yours, one of my top concerns is keeping the stream of books flowing.

The dumb part is that he has books waiting to be read at home. I asked him about 20 times whether he had enough to read and he assured me he did. Not that it was bad to buy more, just that we lots more to lug home than I expected.

I had such fun hiking with y'all and talking about books. Hope to see you soon when we get back!
