Morning began a little early today, but that’s okay for several reasons. First reason: as of today, Brent and I have been married one whole year. Give the man a medal! And check his sanity because he declares himself willing to continue. I am a lucky woman.

The second reason is less exciting. I have a lot to do today. Getting started early can’t hurt, right? Besides, Monday is a day on which things actually happen, before reality kicks in, after I’ve had a weekend either to rest, or exhaust myself, or both.

The weekend just past falls under “Both, Coach!” (Anybody but me remember the commercial with Deion Sanders and Jerry Jones?) We spent the first part of Saturday learning to make paperweights out of molten glass. Our friends Peter and Anneli said they were going to take the class with their son Allan and invited us to come along. Miraculously, I did not burn myself much—nothing compared to the time I picked up a curling iron by the wrong end. I’m sure my paperweights came out extremely, um, sincere, in the Charlie Brown sense of the word, and will be a suitable and traditional present for my mom for Christmas.

The second part of Saturday involved getting gussied up to have an anniversary dinner out with some friends. Lamb ravioli with truffle oil: what a good idea! Most of my conversation was with my friend Opal, who is 4 and insistent, so I could mostly keep up. (Admittedly, a lot of the conversation was about how I had neglected to bring my boys. This led to having to explain that the boys were with their dad and not with us, where she could play with them. Silly me.)

I dragged my behind out of bed early on Sunday morning to read in church. That and the grocery shopping pretty much cover everything useful I did yesterday. While I was watching part of two dreadful football games, the scarf I’m knitting did get longer.

All of which explains why today will be full of walking, writing, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and all the other essentials I didn’t get done during all that fun. Better get to it.
