Old Friends

It is good to see old friends. Over the weekend, the four of us had dinner with my former boss, a former writing buddy, a future ruler of the universe, and my godchild, a remarkable family all around. Unfortunately, they are a remarkable family living in Denver nowadays, so having them around is a special treat.

They have built a great life for themselves in Denver. Gary loves his new job because he’s appreciated for what he does and who he is. Susan, who recognizes that this is what she does, is trying to figure out what to do next now that both kids are in school. Beilin appears to be one of the few people able to negotiate middle school without massive angst. My godson Peng Peng is just a happy guy, doing the kindergarten thing.

We talked about books and church and change, about bikes and snow. We caught up on the doings of our various relatives. We compared political landscapes and stupid ballot propositions. We ate cake.

Sadly, they had to leave. But it was good to warm myself in their presence.
